Amazon Brand Registry Application Guide with EUIPO

Prerequisites

Brand Registry is the biggest SEO and protection tool Amazon gives sellers — and at the same time, the step most people get wrong or start too late. The typical sequence is: launch the listing first, get annoyed by hijackers, then register a trademark. The right order is the other way around.

What you’ll have after this tutorial: a registered EUIPO trademark (or national trademark) and an active Brand Registry status on Amazon that unlocks A+ Content, Sponsored Brands, protection against listing hijackers, and Brand Story. Plus the truth about how many months you actually need — nobody likes waiting, but realism saves frustration.

What You Need Before Starting

  • A business decision: national trademark (single country, lower cost) or EUIPO trademark (all EU marketplaces, 850 EUR for 1 class). For Amazon FBA sellers, EUIPO is almost always the right call.
  • Brand name — the exact name that will appear on your Amazon products.
  • Logo (optional but recommended) — an SVG or high-resolution PNG file.
  • Classification of goods/services (Nice Classification) — for Amazon FBA sellers, typically Class 21 (kitchen utensils), Class 25 (clothing), Class 14 (jewelry), etc. More on this below.
  • Money — 850 EUR for EUIPO 1 class, 290 EUR for a German national trademark with 3 classes. If the SME Fund 2026 applies: up to 75% reimbursement.

Step 1: Trademark Search — Are Your Words Even Available?

Before filing a trademark, check whether it’s already registered. An application fails due to:

  • Identical trademarks in the same or similar class
  • Likelihood of confusion with similar trademarks
  • Descriptive terms (“pot set” or “cookware” alone can’t be protected as a trademark)
  • State emblems or geographic terms without permission

Research tools (free):

  • TMview (tmdn.org) — searches all EU trademark offices including EUIPO and national offices
  • EUIPO eSearch plus — direct access to the EUIPO trademark register
  • National trademark registers — each country’s IP office has its own search tool

Process:

  1. Enter your desired brand name.
  2. Filter: relevant classes (for Amazon FBA usually 21, 25, 28, 14 — see below).
  3. Geography: EU for EUIPO application.
  4. Review all results.

If the name is completely clear: great. If similar trademarks exist in the same class: consider adjusting or asking a trademark attorney whether your application has a realistic chance.

Rule of thumb: Single-word trademarks of 3–6 characters (like “Daniks,” “Tropeza,” “Fornel”) have higher success rates than generic terms or word combinations with common words.

Time required: 30–60 minutes of research.

Step 2: Choose Classes (Nice Classification)

The Nice Classification organizes goods and services into 45 classes. You must specify in your trademark application which classes your trademark should be protected in.

Common classes for Amazon FBA sellers:

  • Class 7 — Machines, tools (drills, cordless screwdrivers, saws)
  • Class 9 — Electronics (smartphones, accessories, Bluetooth devices)
  • Class 11 — Lighting, heating, sanitary
  • Class 14 — Jewelry, watches
  • Class 16 — Stationery, office supplies, books
  • Class 18 — Leather goods, bags, suitcases
  • Class 20 — Furniture, mirrors, picture frames
  • Class 21 — Household utensils, kitchen utensils, pots, tableware
  • Class 25 — Clothing, shoes, accessories
  • Class 28 — Toys, sporting goods, games
  • Class 31 — Pet food, live animals, fresh plants

EUIPO costs 2026 by class:

  • 1 class: 850 EUR
  • 2 classes: 850 + 50 = 900 EUR
  • 3 classes: 850 + 50 + 150 = 1,050 EUR

My tip: start with only the class(es) that directly cover your first product. You can register additional classes later when you expand your product range. Trademarks in too many classes are more expensive and create more conflicts with other trademarks.

Time required: 15 minutes.

Step 3: Check the SME Fund 2026 (Before Filing)

The EUIPO SME Fund 2026 reimburses up to 75% of official trademark filing fees for small and medium enterprises — up to 1,000 EUR per year for IP protection.

Requirements:

  • You’re an SME under EU definition (fewer than 250 employees, less than 50 million EUR revenue or 43 million EUR balance sheet total).
  • You apply for the SME subsidy BEFORE filing the trademark.

Process (brief):

  1. Go to euipo.europa.eu/sme-fund and submit your application.
  2. Wait for confirmation (1–4 weeks).
  3. Only AFTER confirmation, start the trademark application and pay the fees with the subsidy code.
  4. After successful trademark registration, submit the reimbursement claim.

Important: if you file the trademark first and apply for the subsidy afterward, the reimbursement is void. Order matters.

With an 850 EUR filing fee for 1 class, the subsidy can save you 638 EUR — bringing net costs down to 213 EUR. That’s worth doing.

Time required: 30 minutes for the application, then 1–4 weeks waiting for confirmation.

Step 4: Submit the EUIPO Trademark Application

Go to euipo.europa.eu then “File a trade mark” then “Fast Track” or “Standard.”

Fast Track is cheaper and faster but has stricter requirements for goods descriptions. For most Amazon FBA sellers, Fast Track works fine.

Enter:

  • Trademark type: word mark (text only), figurative mark (text + logo), pure figurative mark, or other forms
  • Trademark text: your brand name exactly as it should appear on products
  • Logo file (for figurative marks): SVG or high-resolution PNG
  • Classes (see Step 2)
  • Goods/services lists per class — use EUIPO standard descriptions where possible (simplifies the application)
  • Applicant data: company name, address, authority to represent
  • Payment method: credit card, SEPA direct debit, or bank transfer

Time required: 30–45 minutes for first-time applicants.

Step 5: Wait for Processing and Registration

After filing:

  • Acknowledgement of receipt: immediately by email.
  • Formal examination (1–2 months): EUIPO checks whether your application is formally complete.
  • Publication in the EUTM Bulletin (3 months): third parties can file opposition.
  • Opposition period (3 months): if nobody opposes, the process continues.
  • Registration (1 month after the opposition period expires).

Total timeline without opposition: 4–8 months.

With opposition: can extend to 12–18 months, depending on complexity. Opposition proceedings cost an additional 320 EUR plus typically 800–3,000 EUR in attorney fees.

You’ll receive a EUIPO registration certificate as PDF — this is the proof you need for Amazon Brand Registry.

Time required: passive waiting. Plan your setup workflow around the 4–8 month waiting period.

Step 6: Apply for Brand Registry on Amazon

Once you have the registration certificate (not before!), you can apply for Brand Registry.

  1. Log in at brandservices.amazon.com with your seller account.
  2. Click “Enroll a new brand” or “Register your brand.”
  3. Enter your brand name exactly as registered with EUIPO.
  4. Select the trademark office: EUIPO for EU trademarks, or your national office for national trademarks.
  5. Enter the trademark number (received from EUIPO — format e.g., 018xxxxxxxx).
  6. Upload a photo of your product showing the brand clearly visible (logo or brand name on the product itself, not just on the packaging).
  7. Upload the trademark registration PDF if requested.
  8. Select product categories (should correlate with your trademark classes).
  9. Enter a “verification contact” — typically yourself or your trademark attorney.

Amazon verifies the application in 5–14 days. You’ll receive a confirmation email with a verification code — this goes to the trademark attorney address stored in the EUIPO register or to your own address, depending on configuration.

Enter the verification code in Brand Registry and Amazon activates Brand Registry.

Time required: 30 minutes for the application, 5–14 days processing.

Step 7: Activate Brand Registry Benefits

With active Brand Registry, you get access to:

  1. A+ Content (Brand Story module, product comparison tables, premium layouts) — see my listing optimization article for why this matters.
  2. Sponsored Brands & Sponsored Display — higher PPC reach with logo ads.
  3. Brand Store — a standalone brand page with its own URL on Amazon.
  4. Listing hijack protection — you can remove hijacker sellers from your listing directly.
  5. Project Zero (limited) — automated detection and removal of counterfeit products.
  6. Transparency Program (optional) — hologram labels against counterfeits.
  7. Brand Analytics — valuable customer and search query data.

My tip from real experience: activate A+ Content first (Brand Story + 3–5 modules per listing) and Brand Store (single-page setup with main products). These two give you the biggest conversion impact.

Time required: 2–4 hours initial setup per brand + listings.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

  1. Applying for Brand Registry before trademark registration. Not possible. You need the EUIPO registration certificate, not just the application. Plan for the 4–8 months.

  2. National trademark without considering the EU strategy. A national-only trademark covers one country. If you sell on Amazon.fr/it/es/nl (Pan-EU), you need EUIPO. A national trademark only makes sense if you truly sell only on one marketplace.

  3. Brand name identical to a competitor’s. Application gets rejected or triggers opposition. Take the research in Step 1 seriously.

  4. Wrong classes selected. The class must match your actual product. “Class 25 (clothing)” for a pot set will fail.

  5. Goods list too generic. “All goods in Class 21” often gets rejected. Be specific: “pots, pans, bowls, stainless steel cookware.”

  6. Missing the SME Fund. Not claiming 638 EUR in free money — that stings.

  7. Wrong address on file at the trademark office. The verification code goes to the address stored in the EUIPO register. Make sure it’s correct — otherwise the code lands in someone else’s mailbox.

  8. Brand name not visible on the product. Amazon wants a photo showing the brand physically on the product — not just on the packaging. Plan the brand marking when designing your product.
